Davao City-based evangelist Apollo Quiboloy

MANILA, Philippines: Pastor Apollo Quiboloy, founder of the Davao-based church Kingdom of Jesus Christ, The Name Above Every Name (KOJC) is still in the country, contrary to reports that he is already abroad in anticipation of two separate subpoenas issued against him by the Senate and the House of Representatives.

Bureau of Immigration (BI) records showed that Quiboloy, 73, has not left the country for the past seven months or since July 2023.

The last time Quiboloy travelled abroad was on July 16, 2023 and returned on July 22, 2023 or six days after.

The BI record contradicted a report by online news platform Pulitiko, citing highly reliable sources, that Quiboloy is in China.

Vlogger Bertini “Toto” Causing, a former newsman, said that as per report by the same online news platform, Senate President Juan Miguel Zubiri did not immediately sign the subpoena against Quiboloy as requested by Sen. Ma. Theresia “Risa” Hontiveros so as to give the controversial religious leader some leeway.

The subpoena was meant to compel Quiboloy to appear at the Senate inquiry into the alleged abuses he committed against members of his religious group.

Zubiri signed the subpoena on February 19 only after Hontiveros came out in the media about the Senate President’s inaction on her 10-day letter request to sign the issuance of subpoena.against Quiboloy.

Zubiri said, however, that it was not his intention, saying that he has been very busy about pressing issues between the Senate and the House and by pending administrative work, among others.

“In the middle of our efforts to protect the institution, a lot of our administrative work has piled up in my office, including paperwork that needs my signature,” Zubiri said.

A separate subpoena has also been issued by the House of Representatives on Monday requiring Quiboloy to attend the March 12 hearing of the House legislative Franchise Committee.
