I always dreamt of being a cop, Deepti Sharma after becoming DSP in Uttar Pradesh Police
NEW DELHI: Indian women’s cricket team all-rounder Deepti Sharma has realized a childhood dream by being appointed as a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) in the Uttar Pradesh Police, despite pursuing a different career path. Hailing from Agra, Sharma received this prestigious appointment last month and was honored by state Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath with a cash prize of Rs 3 crore for her exceptional performances in recent years, including winning the Asian Games gold and the Commonwealth Games silver in 2022.
“I always dreamt of becoming a police officer. I used to see that it is a difficult job but I always wanted to wear that uniform once and wanted to see how it felt,” Sharma shared with PTI Video, expressing her childhood aspirations and gratitude for her family’s support in pursuing this dream.
Recognized as the women’s international cricketer of the year for the 2022-23 season in the annual BCCI honors, Sharma’s all-round skills have been pivotal. She claimed 38 wickets and scored 313 runs, including two half-centuries, in the T20 format during the award period.
Sharma is currently preparing for the Women’s Premier League in Bengaluru, aiming to make a mark alongside spinner Sophie Ecclestone in the UP Warriorz team. The Warriorz, led by the top-ranked T20I bowlers Sharma and Ecclestone, will commence their campaign against Royal Challengers on Saturday.
Expressing her batting preferences, Sharma stated, “The more balls I face, the more time I will get to score big. But whether I bat above or below, my focus will be to contribute for the team.” Her determination and versatility on and off the field highlight Sharma’s commitment to excel in every role she undertakes.
