1 in 5 young people are victims of domestic violence, especially young women

One in five young people between the ages of 16 and 24 has been a victim of domestic violence between March 2019 and April 2020. Girls and women are particularly affected, reports the Central Bureau of Statistics. In 12 percent of the cases, it concerned structural violence.

Domestic violence includes hitting, kicking and threatening physical pain. The figures come from an analysis based on the Domestic Violence and Sexual Violence Prevalence Monitor of Statistics Netherlands and the WODC (Scientific Research and Documentation Centre).

According to the statisticians, what also occurs relatively often among young people (10 percent) is ‘coercive control’. Statistics Netherlands defines this as structural domestic violence “in which one person strongly dominates the other”. 5 percent of the young people were the victim of stalking by an ex-partner. Domestic sexual violence was the least common (3 percent).

According to Statistics Netherlands, young women are more often victims of all forms of domestic violence than young men. In particular, they are much more likely to deal with a stalker. According to the researchers, men are more likely to commit domestic violence.

It is the first edition of the survey. “Next editions are planned in 2022 and 2024,” according to CBS.
