Royal news - live: Prince William visits Kate in hospital as Queen gives health update on King

LIVE – Updated at 07:46

The Prince of Wales has visited the hospital where the Princess of Wales is recuperating after undergoing successful abdominal surgery.

William drove himself away from the London Clinic in an Audi e-Tron GT Carbon Vorsprung, followed by a Land Rover Discovery, and left by the back entrance during the low-key, private visit.

It comes as the Queen today said that the King is “fine” and “looking forward to getting back to work” as he awaits treatment for an enlarged prostate.

Charles’ condition is said to be benign and part of a corrective procedure, Buckingham Palace said. However, all public engagements have been postponed as he recuperates.

The news of Kate’s surgery came just an hour before it was revealed King Charles will also attend hospital next week.

Kate, 42, was admitted to The London Clinic on Tuesday for the planned procedure.

The future Queen is expected to remain in hospital for 10 to 14 days before returning home to continue her recovery.

Prince Harry may have been unaware of King’s condition

Prince Harry may not have been informed about King Charle’s enlarged prostate before the news was announced to the public, say the Telegraph.

The announcement was made in the UK at 3.25pm which is 7.25am in the Duke of Sussex’s Californian home, and the Prince may have been informed via a news alert, the paper understands.

Prince Harry was flying to Scotland when the announcement was made so could have missed any direct messages, report the Telegraph.

The royals informed all the senior members of the Royal family, including Prince Harry, before broadcasting the news, say the publication.

The publication reached out to the palace and the Sussex’s who declined to comment.

The London Clinic was officially opened by the then-Duke and Duchess of York in 1932, the future King George VI and his wife Queen Elizabeth.

It was the brainchild of a group of Harley Street doctors, who set out to plan a new nursing home using the highest medical standards of the day, and its website says it was “founded on the principles of providing excellence in one place”.

Around 155 different conditions are treated at the hospital, which also operates as a charity, reinvesting in research, education and innovation.

It is registered to provide surgery as well as diagnostics and screening, treatment of disease, disorder or injury, management of supply of blood and blood-derived products.

The building at 20 Devonshire Place has seven main operating theatres and three additional theatres, as well as six speciality wards for surgeries in urology, gynaecology, thoracic surgery, orthopaedics and spinal procedures.

“William and Kate have always put their family first and now the Prince of Wales’ central role will be to be there for his wife and his children until the Princess has made a full recovery.”

The future Queen is expected to remain in hospital for 10 to 14 days before returning home to continue her recovery.

The Princess of Wales, 42, was admitted to The London Clinic on Tuesday for the planned procedure on her abdomen.

The future Queen is expected to remain in hospital for 10 to 14 days before returning home to continue her recovery.

A former patient at the Dimple Mistry wrote in MailOnilne: “I hope she’s feeling well enough to choose between the salt and pepper squid with aioli, the steamed ginger and soy seabass, and the cep and wild mushroom risotto, perhaps with a side of truffle fries, or — more likely — a ‘Harley Street Blossom’, a smoothie of coconut water, mango, kale and mint.”

King ‘has raised awareness of common condition’ – expert

01:34 , Barney Davis

The King’s desire to share his diagnosis of an enlarged prostate will lead to a rise in men with symptoms of the condition seeking help, an expert has said.

It is understood Charles, 75, was keen to share his diagnosis, in order to encourage other men who may be experiencing symptoms to get checked in line with health advice.

One in every three men over the age of 50 will have symptoms of an enlarged prostate including needing to visit the toilet more frequently, with more urgency and have difficulty emptying their bladder.

Timing of King and Princess of Wales health updates a ‘coincidence’

Thursday 18 January 2024 22:43 , Barney Davis

According to the Telegraph, Kate was not rushed to the hospital but aides were still planning for her trips and future engagements as recently as the end of last week.

The paper added the timing of King Charles’s Wednesday health announcement, which was made 90 minutes after the palace revealed the princess had undergone surgery, was a coincidence.

The king only decided to announce his benign prostate condition just hours after receiving his diagnosis following a check-up appointment earlier this week.

Family rally around Princess of Wales as she prepares to spend third night in hospital

The nature of the Princess of Wales’ condition is still unknown although Kensington Palace confirmed it was not cancer-related.

Reports say Prince William wants to continue taking Prince George, ten, Princess Charlotte, eight, and five-year-old Prince Louis to school whilst Kate recovers in hospital to create a sense of normality for their children.

Kate’s parents and siblings Pippa Matthews and James Middleton are already rallying round to help prepare her recovery at her home in Windsor, which is close to their own homes.

Prince William will also have the help of their nanny, Maria, and Kate’s parents, Michael and Carole Middleton who have regularly held sleepovers for their grandchildren.

The King is set to go to hospital to be treated for an enlarged prostate.

According to the NHS, benign prostate enlargement (BPE) is “the medical term to describe an enlarged prostate, a condition that can affect how you pee”. The prostate is a small gland in the pelvis, found between the penis and the bladder.

It’s not cancerous, nor does it increase your risk of developing prostate cancer.

It’s common in men over the age of 50 – it can affect younger men, but that is a lot rarer.

ICYMI – King Charles’ official portrait for public buildings unveiled

Thursday 18 January 2024 13:33 , Lydia Patrick

A new official portrait of King Charles in military regalia which will hang in public buildings across the UK as part of a controversial £8million government-funded scheme has been unveiled.

The picture shows the monarch wearing his Royal Navy uniform as an Admiral of the Fleet with medals and honours on display.

It was captured last year by photographer Hugo Burnand, who also took the King and Queen’s coronation portraits and their 2005 wedding photos, and will replace those of Queen Elizabeth II at public institutions up and down the country.

But there were criticisms last year when the Cabinet Office revealed the portrait scheme’s £8m budget.

She rented a house near her children’s school just for playdates, enjoys a drink with friends and thinks about being royal as a job, says Vassi Chamberlain who talks to those who know her. After years of navigating her husband’s world, the Princess of Wales is finally getting back to being the assured woman she was when she met him.

The conclusion of The Crown marks the appearance of the royal family’s most outwardly charismatic member: the Princess of Wales. But despite all the recent speculation, she appears in it only fleetingly, ending as it does with Charles and Camilla’s 2005 wedding; a relief, no doubt, in light of the recent race allegations against her uncovered in a Dutch draft of Omid Scobie’s latest book Endgame.

The Princess of Wales was last seen in public 23 days ago on Christmas Day when she walked to church with the rest of the royal family.

She held hands with her daughter Princess Charlotte and looked happy and relaxed as she grinned at well-wishers while strolling to the service at St Mary Magdalene Church in Sandringham.

Three weeks later, Kate, who has undergone abdominal surgery, is expected to be out of action until after Easter and away from royal duties for up to three months.

In December, the princess was busy hosting her annual carol concert at Westminster Abbey.

The King’s refreshing frankness about his forthcoming treatment for a benign enlarged prostate will help demystify a very private condition affecting almost two-thirds of men over 60 – and will, in turn, enable more patients to be treated, says Sean O’Grady.

I was equally delighted to learn that our 75-year-old sovereign will soon be happy and glorious again, as he will undergo treatment next week for benign prostate enlargement (BPE).

Prince William will not be carrying out his royal duties whilst his wife Princess Kate has abdominal surgery and King Charles prepares to be treated for an enlarged prostate.

The Prince of Wales is to take time off, stepping back from all official duties for several weeks, while he juggles looking after their children Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis with caring for his wife.

Meanwhile, the King is preparing for a corrective procedure after being diagnosed with a benign enlarged prostate.

Buckingham Palace, in an unprecedented double royal health scare, announced the news just an hour and a half after Kensington Palace revealed Kate’s operation.

Why is Kate Middleton stating in hospital for so long?

Dr Deborah Lee, from Dr Fox Online Pharmacy, told the Express: “For abdominal surgery, most people stay in the hospital for four to seven days. After laparoscopic surgery [a type of keyhole surgery], this is reduced to two to four days.

“It very much depends on what exactly has been done. If a patient needs to go to ITU, it’s likely their hospital stay would be considerably longer. It can take two months or more for the patient to feel comfortable and be able to move around normally afterwards.”

Why is King Charles being admitted next week?

Thursday 18 January 2024 08:15 , Lydia Patrick

The King is preparing for a corrective procedure after being diagnosed with a benign enlarged prostate.

Buckingham Palace, in an unprecedented double royal health scare, announced the news just an hour and a half after Kensington Palace revealed Kate’s operation.

The 75-year-old monarch, who acceded to the throne 16 months ago, will be admitted to hospital next week.

He was said to be keen to go public with his condition to encourage other men who may be experiencing symptoms to get checked.

Ian Eardley, consultant urological surgeon in Leeds and national clinical director for NHS England, said the King’s openness would lead to a rise in those seeking help.

One in every three men over the age of 50 will have symptoms of an enlarged prostate including needing to visit the toilet more frequently, with more urgency and have difficulty emptying their bladder.

The King is staying at Birkhall in Aberdeenshire with the Queen but the Palace has not confirmed whether he will be treated in London or Scotland.

He is said to be in touch with the Waleses, with a source describing them as a “close family”.

Kate ‘doing well’ in hospital as she begins recovery after abdominal surgery

Thursday 18 January 2024 07:37 , Lydia Patrick

The Princess of Wales remains in hospital after abdominal surgery, with sources saying she is “doing well” but will spend up to three months recovering.

Kate was admitted on Tuesday for the successful, planned procedure but is expected to stay in the private London Clinic for 10-14 days before returning to her Adelaide Cottage home in Windsor.

The Prince of Wales is to take time off, stepping back from all official duties for several weeks, while he juggles looking after their children Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis with caring for his wife.

Kate also has a strong bond with her parents Carole and Michael Middleton and siblings Pippa Matthews and James Middleton, and the family, who live nearby in Berkshire, will be on hand to support her recovery.

The nature of the princess’s condition has not been revealed although Kensington Palace confirmed it was not cancerous.

It is serious enough, however, for heir to the throne William to be postponing official duties while his wife is in hospital and in the immediate aftermath while she recuperates, devoting his time to his family.

The princess is not expected to return to public duties until after Easter based on current medical advice, Kensington Palace said.

William was looking after George, 10, Charlotte, 8, and five-year-old Louis on Wednesday evening.

The princess marked her birthday just over a week ago, with the monarchy’s official social media accounts sharing a new behind-the-scenes photo of the princess at the King’s coronation.

Kate usually enjoys good health but was previously admitted to hospital while pregnant after suffering from hyperemesis gravidarum – severe morning sickness.

Like the rest of the royal family, she has had a busy, turbulent past couple of years, with the Platinum Jubilee and the late Queen’s death in 2022, and the coronation in 2023, as well as adjusting to her new role as the Princess of Wales.

The Waleses also faced the ongoing rift between William and his brother the Duke of Sussex, with Harry making controversial claims about Charles, Camilla, William and Kate in his Netflix documentary and memoir Spare.

William’s former university flatmate has carefully carved out her charity work since marrying the prince in 2011 and becoming an HRH, focusing on mental health and early childhood.

Seen as the monarchy’s safe pair of hands and as having a “keep calm and carry on” approach, Kate has been heralded as channelling the same characteristics of charm, politeness and toughness as the late Queen Mother, who was once described as “a marshmallow made on a welding machine”.
