Lok Sabha panel adopts resolution to revoke suspension of Congress MPs Jayakumar, Khaleque and Vasanth
The Lok Sabha Privileges Committee has adopted a resolution to revoke the suspension of three Congress MPs – K Jayakumar, Abdul Khaleque and Vijay Vasanth – as they expressed regrets for their behaviour unconditionally, sources said. The three MPs were among the 33 suspended from the Lok Sabha on December 18, for disrupting the proceedings of the House amid protests over the Parliament security breach incident.
While Khaleque, 52, represents Assam’s Barpeta constituency, Vasanth, 40, is the MP from Kanyakumari, and Jayakumar, 73, represents Namakkal in Tamil Nadu.
The Privileges Committee, headed by the BJP’s Sunil Kumar Singh, adopted the resolution in a meeting held on Friday. The resolution will be sent to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on Monday. The Lok Sabha secretariat is expected to announce the revocation in its bulletin next week, sources added.
The three MPs were summoned before the panel to appear before it on Friday to record their statement in connection with “creating grave disorder in the House”. The MPs expressed regret for their behaviour in the House before the panel.
The Winter Session of Parliament witnessed a record number of suspensions – 100 from the Lok Sabha and 46 from the Rajya Sabha – as the Opposition MPs staged protests by bringing placards to the houses seeking a statement from the Union Home Minister Amit Shah and a discussion over the security breach incident in the Lok Sabha.
While the suspension of the other Lok Sabha MPs were for the rest of the Winter Session, the suspensions of Jayakumar, Khaleque and Vasanth, who had reached the presiding officer’s chair, were referred to the Privileges Committee. Meanwhile, the suspension of 11 Rajya Sabha MPs, referred to its Privileges Committee, is still in effect. The last meeting of the committee, held earlier this week, could not take up the matter due to lack of quorum.
In August, the Lok Sabha Privileges Committee had unanimously adopted a resolution to revoke the suspension of Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury. The MP was suspended for his remarks against Prime Minister Narendra Modi during a speech in Parliament during the Monsoon session. Chowdhury had also expressed regret over his comments.
