Mob wife style is taking over TikTok... Here's how to get the look (think faux fur, leopard print and gold!)

Guests at Kate Moss's 50th birthday party in Paris were decadent in outfitsREAD MORE: Moss classics make a super-stylish return

Guests’ outfits at Kate Moss’s 50th birthday party in Paris last week were as decadent as the event no doubt was. Black lace (Kate), faux fur (Charlotte Tilbury) and animal print (Stella McCartney) ruled.

It was a masterclass in the flashy aesthetic trending on social media and the High Street — a noisy rejection of good taste and ‘quiet luxury’.

Twentysomethings are calling it ‘mob wife’, but we think of it as more Trophy Girlfriend, with a hint of Lottery Winner.

Worried the look is, whisper it, a little vulgar? Well, head-to-toe, sure. But mostly, it’s flattering, and a lot of fun, an opportunity to break away from beige and steal the spotlight.

So, step away from stealth wealth. welcome to the era of Loud Luxury…

SUPERSIZE SUNNIES

Any accessory that semaphores ‘I only turn left on planes’ comes Loud Luxe approved. Giant tortoiseshell or black sunglasses fit the bill perfectly. And the irony of dark glasses in winter befits the Loud Luxer’s unshakable self-assurance

Kelly Rutherford, previously a devotee of stealth wealth, is a big fan of statement shades, now paired with another flashy staple — faux fur. The former Gossip Girl actress also proves that the trend works as well for midlifers as millennials.

Rutherford is 55 and perfectly demonstrates that the key to making the look less vulgar and more chic is down to pairings.

Head to her Instagram to see how she makes faux fur and larger-than-life sunnies work for everyday wear by teaming them with unpretentious denim and knits.

FAUX FUR: NO LONGER A FAUX PAS

When Jennifer Lawrence threw a vintage Bill Blass coat over a buttery velvet dress at the Golden Globes after-party this month, Loud Luxers drooled.

For this was a leopardprint, velvet, faux-fur trimmed Bill Blass coat, no less. Hedonism in coat form and very Sharon Stone in 1995 Martin Scorsese’s classic Casino.

Alexa Chung and Jenna Coleman are fans of London brand Shrimps, responsible for bringing faux fur to the luxury market with its colourful outerwear.

The Outnet has abeautiful chocolate-brown Shrimps coat, reduced to £357 from £650 (theoutnet.com). To jazz up an old coat or jumper, head to Helen Moore (helenmoore.com ) for faux-fur collars and cuffs costing under £50.

BET YOUR BOOTS

You know a trend is big news when Taylor Swift gets on board.

Earlier this month, the pop princess stepped out in a pair of £1,875 Jimmy Choo boots that were all kinds of flashy. Ostentation for the feet.

Heeled? Check. Over-the-knee? Double check. Snakes painted onto them? Triple check.

A more versatile option? Plain leather with heels or a suede boot that sits just above the knee. You’ll find yourself reaching for these to wear under midi dresses during the week and tucked into jeans at the weekend.

GOLD RUSH

When it comes to jewellery that shouts, it has to be gold — whether it’s layered chains, earrings like chocolate coins or weighty watch straps and bracelets.

If you can’t afford the real deal, the High Street is awash with costume pieces. For authentic 1980s vintage — gold’s heyday — head to Susan Caplan (susancaplan.co.uk).

To avoid looking too Bet Lynch, wear one statement item: chunky gold earrings or necklace, never together. Rotary (rotary watches.com) has a £289 dupe of Cartier’s £21,000 gold Tank.

CHANGE YOUR SPOTS

If the tiger-print mini-dress Stella McCartney wore to Kate Moss’s party sounds too scary, animal-print accessories are an easy way to add just a dash of opulence to wardrobe staples.

Try a leopard-print belt or shoe for the perfect balance between ostentation and taste.

For the more daring, Albaray (albaray.co.uk) has a leopard-print coat reduced to £130 that could pass for triple the price.

The key is that it doesn’t scrimp on expensive-looking detail: featuring an oversized collar, tie waist, classic epaulettes and cuff straps. Too much – but in a good way.
