Injury rocks Kiwis on eve of first Aussie Test

New Zealand has been rocked on the eve of the first Test against Australia with confirmation Devon Conway won’t be available.

The opening batter suffered a thumb injury while wicketkeeping in Friday’s Twenty20 match, and had to leave the field.

The Black Caps on Wednesday announced Conway, 32, won’t play in Wellington in the match starting Thursday morning.

“Another update will be provided later in the week following further medical consultation to ascertain the extent of the injury and the final diagnosis,” NZC said in a statement.

Conway was unable to bat in Friday’s T20 and was also ruled out of Sunday’s series dead rubber.

The news comes a day after fast bowler Neil Wagner retired, also ruling him out of the Test series.

Conway averages 41.58 in Test cricket and has four centuries to his name from 20 matches.

Henry Nicholls has been called into the Test squad as cover, but the Kiwis will confirm their team at the toss at 8.30am on Thursday (AEDT).

Australian captain Pat Cummins will address media on Wednesday.
