Services Australia facing over one million claims in backlog

Services Australia is “snowed under” after it has been revealed they are handling a backlog of around 1.1 million claims, Sky News host James Macpherson says.

“Services Australia, which handles things like the old age pension, unemployment benefits, child support, it has been revealed they have a backlog of 1.1 million claims,” Mr Macpherson said.

“There were people online today saying they had been waiting up to seven months to find out whether or not they were approved for the old age pension, in the meantime their finances were going backwards.

“This is a government department that already has a staff of 30,000 people, they have just put on 3,000 more staff in one day – they are snowed under.”

The backlog includes around 360,000 social security and welfare claims, and potentially nearly 775,000 Medicare claims.
