Helldivers 2 Devs Once ‘Contemplated’ Exciting Map Concept
- Helldivers 2 almost had underground maps, but the challenges proved too difficult for implementation.
- The game’s combat is challenging, with missions that are both thrilling and difficult to survive.
- Despite the excitement, underground maps won’t be added to Helldivers 2 due to gameplay changes and technical challenges.
Confirmation from the official Discord for Helldivers 2 reveals that the game almost had underground maps, but the implementation proved to be far too difficult to pull off. The combat in Helldivers 2 can be incredibly challenging at times, and the underground maps would have truly brought a harrowing experience.
Since its launch at the beginning of the year, Helldivers 2 has proven to be one of the biggest hits of 2024 so far. With its hilarious satirical world filled with compelling lore combined with some exhilarating combat, Helldivers 2 immediately hit it off with many players. The in-game missions can be a blast, but they are also notoriously challenging at times. Dying in Helldivers 2 is a common occurrence that eventually became an accepted part of playing the game for many fans, but there were almost even harder maps added to the third-person shooter.

Helldivers 2 CEO Says No to Adding Popular Customization Mechanic
Arrowhead Game Studios CEO, Johan Pilestedt, confirms that one much-requested customization feature won’t be coming to Helldivers 2.
As originally reported by GamesRadar, the developers at Arrowhead Game Studios once considered adding underground maps to the game. The addition of new mission types in Helldivers 2 has opened the door for more possible game modes to be included in the game, but underground maps likely won’t be arriving in the future. While community members discussed whether underground maps would eventually be added to the game or not, a developer for Arrowhead Game Studios cleared the air by explaining the challenges of an underground map.
Underground Maps Won’t Be Coming to Helldivers 2 Any Time Soon
Close
Although the thought of an underground map in Helldivers 2 is exciting, it also presents plenty of challenges, and this is what ultimately made Arrowhead Game Studios decide to forego its inclusion. One of the biggest issues would be the problem of friendly fire. The game fully embraces friendly fire, and close-quarter combat would make it a nightmare for some players. This could be a fun challenge for some, but it would also be complete chaos for others. Underground maps would completely change the established gameplay of Helldivers 2, so the idea was scrapped altogether. A Discord community manager stated, “And yes, they could be really cool, but they would also require a lot of tech and logistics based on it being a very different kind of gameplay than surface fighting”.
And yes, they could be really cool, but they would also require a lot of tech and logistics based on it being a very different kind of gameplay than surface fighting.
As Helldivers 2 continues to hit sales milestones, the game has been a great example of how live service games can be done properly. The addictive gameplay and humorous lore have made it a special game for many. Although there may not be any underground maps in the game’s future, it’s at least fun to think about. Helldivers 2 is challenging enough, so foregoing underground maps may be for the best.
Helldivers 2
Helldivers 2 is a third-person cooperative shooter developed by Arrowhead Games Studios for the PC and PlayStation 5 where players take control of a Helldiver set to protect the citizens of Super Earth by traveling to hostile alien worlds and destroying threats. Players undergo missions, defeat enemies, and use special items called Stratagems to help turn the tide of battle in this punishing release.
