Mazda 6 sedan to be discontinued in Japan; PH allocation will be unaffected

It’s the end of an era for another sedan: the Mazda 6 has officially been discontinued in Japan. It might be a hard pill to swallow for some, but this is further proof that sedans really are on their way out.

Mazda recently announced that production of the 6 in the brand’s home market will only be until mid-April this year. The Japanese carmaker expects the CX line to fill the void that its midsize sedan will leave in the lineup, and it assures customers that it will deliver “a lively experience to our customers through driving pleasure that is in tune with the times.”

We then reached out to Mazda Philippines to know how the announcement will affect local supply. Here’s the official statement:

“The Mazda 6 has always been exclusively manufactured in Japan for the Philippines. The recent announcement of the discontinuation of the Mazda 6 in Japan applies only to the Japanese market. In the Philippines, only the SportWagon body is offered, featuring the 20th Anniversary Limited Edition for the 2024 model year, available in both Artisan Red and Rhodium White. Mazda Japan has allocated 21 Mazda 6 units for the 2023 production, with 13 of them already delivered to customers and the remaining in transit or in company and dealer stock.”

There you have it, then. If you’re looking to buy a Mazda 6, then at least for now, you still have a chance to get one. Frankly, though, as much as we love sedans, we’re not betting them to live that much longer in our market—look at what happened to the Honda Accord.
