Hotels are winning over outdoorsy millennials by installing halfpipes, supplying fire pits, and, in many cases, providing gear rentals and bike storage.
Devotees of mountain climbing, skiing and outdoor biking, who once slept on the ground, have discovered their new havens in hotels that blend outdoor adventures with indoor comforts.
A 34-year-old climber named David Russo, who spent his 20s dwelling in tents on bare-bones campgrounds, is consistently seeking new accommodations for his climbing trips.
Russo told the Wall Street Journal: ‘At a certain point, you’re like: “I want my own bathroom… I don’t want to sleep in the dirt for a week.”‘

LOGE Wolf Creek lends polish to its communal space, boasting a 50-inch flat-screen TV, well-stocked fire pits, two outdoor hot tubs and a sauna room.
He finally found an answer on a work trip October 2022 – the Evo Hotel Salt Lake City – a hotel that boasts an indoor skate park, climbing areas and a well-equipped fitness center.
‘There are a lot of people interacting in the morning or at the climbing gym,’ said Russo.
He has visited the hotel for the fourth time and still found himself enjoying the ambience of the cozy rooms decorated by local artists’ work.
The Evo Hotel is among the accommodations catering to adventurous millennials like Russo, who want to treat themselves with craft beer or pour-over coffee after mountaineering and skiing.
‘There is a constant change in how to monetize outdoor recreation,’ architectural historian Margaret Supplee Smith said, adding that the trend is an update rather than an innovation.
She said ski resorts in Sun Valley, Idaho, were among the pioneers in incorporating these amenities for travelers.

After a tiring day of skiing, guests can unwind at the bar or partake in an outdoor s’mores’ night, enjoying the cozy atmosphere.
Slate Olson, the company’s chief marketing officer, says the goal is to create an environment where guests can hang out together.
‘It’s amazing how a fire and a good beer will draw people out of their room,’ Olson said.
These amenities come with a price, as rooms at the Evo and LOGE cost around $150 a night, far surpassing the expenses of a campground or a trashy, trap motel.

Rooms at Field Station Moab can run up to a staggering $500 a night over Memorial Day Weekend.
Located just outside both Arches and Canyonlands National Parks in Utah, the hotel provides canyon tours, climbing trips, and bike rentals.
To ensure their outdoorsy guests don’t go hungry during their excursions, the hotel prepares convenient grab-and-go meals and trail snacks.
Travelers said these hotels are ‘not just somewhere to lay your head,’ and many penned excellent reviews following their stays.
A guest wrote: ‘Having the climbing gym and a fully equipped gym and yoga studio was a huge bonus.
‘The staff was super helpful, good coffee at the coffee bar downstairs, and plenty of spaces to work, read, etc.’
Another person wrote: ‘The walk to the room was enjoyable, there was corn hole in the hallway and fun things to look at. And each room down the hall has its own private little staircase that was super cute.’
