Fresh reports out of China have confirmed the imminent arrival of an all-new second-generation version of the full-size, seven-seat GWM Haval H9 SUV, with production scheduled to kick off in March this year and export sales commencing in August.
The first-generation H9 left the local market in 2022 after four years on-sale, where, despite aggressive pricing and an impressive specification, it struggled to make a significant impact against segment front-runners like the Toyota Prado and Ford Everest.
Images snapped at a recent pre-release briefing in Russia confirm the new model will be available in two four-cylinder versions – a 2.0-litre turbo-petrol all-wheel drive and 2.4-litre turbo-diesel 2WD.

The petrol powertrain is likely an updated version of the previous model’s set-up, producing 180kW/350Nm and matched with an eight-speed auto transmission.
In second-gen guise it boasts an on-demand AWD system with front and rear diff locks as well as 4H and 4L drive modes and an upgraded all-terrain control system featuring six settings including ‘Sand’, ‘Snow and ‘Mud’.
Meanwhile, the turbo-diesel is quoted at 137kW (with maximum torque unknown at this point) and married to a nine-speed auto.

Official combined-cycle fuel efficiency numbers are 11.4L/100km for the petrol version and 10.2L/100km for the diesel.
Sharing an obvious family resemblance to the smaller GWM Tank 300, it’s safe to assume the new H9 will retain the original’s ‘body-on-frame’ construction with key external dimensions of 4859mm long (+3.0mm), 1934mm wide (+8.0mm) and 1853mm tall (-47mm). Ground clearance is 224mm (-1.0mm).
When asked if the second-gen H9 will come to the local market a GWM Australia spokesperson told CarsGuide the new car “is certainly on our radar but not confirmed for Australia at this stage”.

That said, standard features offered globally include a 12.3-inch multimedia touchscreen and 10-speaker audio, as well as Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity.
When the decision to discontinue the original H9 was made at the end of 2021 it was priced at $40,990 for the entry-level Lux model and $44,990 for the top-spec Ultra.
While it may say as much about the state of the Russian Ruble as the car’s potential cost-of-entry in Australia, a direct conversion points to projected prices in that market starting at A$72,400 and rising to A$97,700.
