David Moyes makes Nottingham Forest 'pressure' claim amid West Ham sack banners

david moyes makes nottingham forest 'pressure' claim amid west ham sack banners

West Ham fans react on the final whistle with a ‘David Moyes out’ banner at the Premier League match between Nottingham Forest and West Ham United

David Moyes insists it was Nottingham Forest and not West Ham United who were under pressure at the City Ground this afternoon despite the presence in the away end of banners calling for his dismissal.

The Scot watched as his side conceded a goal to Taiwo Awoniyi in first half stoppage time, then had Kalvin Phillips sent off midway through the second. They would go on to lose 2-0 to a last minute strike from Callum Hudson-Odoi.

That extended their winless run to eight games in all competitions, and saw them slide to ninth in the Premier League table, five points behind sixth-placed Manchester United.

As for Forest their victory saw them leapfrog Crystal Palace and move five points ahead of the bottom three. Which is probably why Moyes felt it was Nuno Espirito Santo’s men who were in greater need as they still trail the Hammers by eight.

“Well, I don’t know if you think it’s drifting, we’ve been sixth and I don’t know if you could say we’re maybe higher than you would expect. You could look at it a different a different way,” Moyes told Sky Sports.

“But I do think that we want to try and finish up there, we want to challenge, we want to be a team who qualifies for Europe every year, it’s three years in a row now playing in Europe, if we could make it four, it would be terrific.

“Look, we’re going through not a good period, but I can think of quite a few Premier League teams who’ve been through periods already. Sometimes, you have to make sure that people know the real facts and the positivity which we’ve had. We’ve been doing great.

“We’ve been sixth, we’ve dropped down a few places which we’re disappointed with but we’ve got a European competition to look forward to. So I think today the people who were really under pressure were Nottingham Forest.”

Moyes felt Phillips’ departure for a second yellow card made the struggle even harder. “It was a tight game. It was very close for long periods. The sending off didn’t help us after 70 minutes, it made it really difficult but it was a tight game.

“We gave away a goal right on half time, which was really disappointing but I think the players showed great spirit, great endeavour to try and do something in the game, they really, really did.

“Their commitment was terrific to try and get a result today, we were just short but that’s the Premier League, it can happen.

“I thought our build up from the back and through the middle third were were pretty good, but the final third today we just lacked the quality.

“I thought we made the wrong decisions on two or three occasions to maybe slide people in who could have maybe scored or got better [placed], we had a couple opportunities so probably the final third was where we let ourselves down more than any anywhere today. But as I said, I thought the players did a terrific job in long parts of the game.”
