The Winnipeg Jets have done it again.
Just one day removed from a sensational five-goal third period road come from behind win over the Carolina Hurricanes, the Jets pulled off another comeback win.
This time, it was in Buffalo over the Sabres.
Sunday evening saw the Jets fall behind twice, before coming back to score four goals in the third period, silencing the home crowd at KeyBank Arena with another strong final frame.
“There’s a lot of fight in this group,” Jets head coach Rick Bowness said following the game.
With the win, the Jets improved to 39-16-5 on the year, and remain in first place in the Central Division with 83 points.
After JJ Peterka got the Sabres on the board with a first period power play goal, Nino Niederreiter responded with his third goal in just two games – his 17th of the season – before the period came to a close.
But then it was Eric Robinson who beat Laurent Brossoit at the midway mark of the game, putting Buffalo ahead 2-1 through 40 minutes of play. The Jets, however, led the shot column 21-12 as the teams entered the third.
Opting to put it all out there once again in the final frame, Winnipeg responded with four goals – including two on the otherwise solid Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen.
Josh Morrissey got the party started with his eighth of the season, finding the twine on a wrist shot at 10:38 of the third.
Morgan Barron then put the Jets ahead for the first time in the game with just 6:05 remaining. His 10th goal of the season made him the eighth Jets player to reach double digits on the year.
Winnipeg padded its stats with Luukkonen on the bench, scoring twice into the empty net. Both Vladislav Namestnikov and Sean Monahan added goals.
“We weren’t that happy in Dallas, but we knew yesterday afternoon in Carolina we were playing well,” Bowness added. “Stay with it. And the same as tonight. I know we were down 2-1, but we were playing really well. We were playing fast, we were creating turnovers, we were creating chances. Just stay in the fight.”
Including the three empty net markers, Winnipeg has now scored nine goals in its past two third periods.
The Jets finished the game with 35 shots on net, while goaltender Brossoit made 17 saves on the 19 pucks he faced.
Morrissey now has 16 points in his last eight games, including five over the past 24 hours.
“He’s been unreal at both ends of the ice,” Bowness said. “He plays so many important minutes against the best lines, the power play. He never disappoints you.”
Next up for the Jets is return back to Canada Life Centre for another extended home-and-home matchup – much like that of the mini, two-game series with the Toronto Maple Leafs in January.
Winnipeg will host the Seattle Kraken on Tuesday night, before travelling to Seattle for a Friday night showdown in Washington state. Both games can be viewed live on TSN, with Tuesday seeing a 7:00 PM central start time, while Friday’s game will get underway at 9:00 PM.
