World of Warcraft just revealed The Voices Within, a new short story collection for The War Within. These tales will feature iconic World of Warcraft characters like Anduin, Thrall, Alleria, and Gazlowe, and are currently planned for a November 5 release date.
The War Within is the first expansion of the Worldsoul Saga, World of Warcraft’s new multi-year storytelling experience that it announced at BlizzCon last year. Though the expansion doesn’t have a solid release date yet, World of Warcraft’s 2024 roadmap estimates the update will arrive in late summer or early Autumn.

World of Warcraft Narrative Director Quietly Left Blizzard Last Year
After months of fan speculation, former World of Warcraft narrative director Steve Danuser confirms that he left Blizzard late last year.
Now, World of Warcraft fans can look forward to a short story anthology later this year as well. The Voices Within is a collection of short stories written by different authors, each of which covers a different iconic World of Warcraft character on their journeys leading up to The War Within. A half dozen stories have been confirmed to be in the anthology, with tales involving Anduin, Thrall, Alleria, and Gazlowe coming in the collection, alongside at least two others. The hardcover version of World of Warcraft: The Voices Within is available for pre-order on Amazon right now for $30.

- A “heartrending tale” by Christie Golden featuring Anduin’s wanderings and failure to find solitude.
- A heartfelt story by Jonathan Maberry about Thrall coming to terms with his son, Durak, growing up and choosing his own path.
- A “tense, bittersweet journey home” involving Alleria, WoW‘s original Void Elf, as she attempts to connect with her son, Arator, written by Delilah Dawson.
- A story by Andrew Robinson featuring Gazlowe inspiring the Goblins of a struggling city to seek out “more worthy ambitions.”
- At least two more stories written by Catherynne M. Valente and Courtney Alameda.
The award-winning authors penning these tales include both newcomers and veterans to the World of Warcraft story circuit. Golden has written several WoW short stories and books over the years, and Alameda authored the recent War of the Scaleborn novel. Robinson has written for cinematics and comics for many Blizzard franchises, including World of Warcraft, and Valente had a story in the Folk & Fairy Tales of Azeroth anthology collection. Dawson and Maberry are new to WoW, but the latter has written at least one short story for Diablo 4’s cash shop.
While it is far from confirmation, the release date for The Voices Within might provide a clue as to when The War Within could launch. Most similar World of Warcraft companion stories came out after their respective expansion’s launch. Considering this factor, World of Warcraft players can probably expect The War Within to be released sometime before November.
World of Warcraft: Dragonflight
World of Warcraft: Dragonflight was developed by Blizzard Entertainment and is the ninth expansion pack for the iconic massively multiplayer online role-playing game World of Warcraft.
Dragonflight features an overhauled user interface, raises the level cap to 70, and introduces a new race and class.
