Siddaramaiah moves Supreme Court seeking to quash FIR filed for blocking traffic
Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Wednesday moved the Supreme Court against a Karnataka High Court order that has dismissed his plea to quash an FIR lodged against him and other Congress leaders in 2022 in relation to a protest march.
The High Court’s decision on February 6 not only rejected the plea but also imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 on each petitioner, including Siddaramaiah, Congress general secretary Randeep Singh Surjewala, and state ministers MB Patil and Ramalinga Reddy.
The high court order also directed Siddaramaiah to appear before a special court on March 6.
The case stems from a march led by Congress members, which aimed to surround the residence of then Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai in Bengaluru, demanding the resignation of KS Eshwarappa, who was serving as the rural development and panchayat raj minister at the time.
Eshwarappa faced allegations of corruption linked to a contractor’s suicide.
The police registered a case against the Congress leaders for allegedly blocking roads and causing inconvenience to commuters.
However, Siddaramaiah has argued that the charges are baseless and that the protest did not involve any violent actions or use of criminal force. He contends that the legal proceedings are an abuse of the process.
Siddaramaiah’s plea said that the protest was peaceful and did not pose any imminent threat to the public or individuals, including the minister in question.
