New York Mets’ future star Ronny Mauricio was expected to get his chance to prove he can be the player everyone expects him to be this season. He made his MLB debut on Sept. 1 last season, slashing .248/.296/.347 with two home runs in 101 at-bats.

The 22-year-old injured his knee while playing for the Tigres del Licey in the Dominican Winter League during December.

It was later revealed that he had a torn ACL and needed surgery to repair it, making it likely that he’d miss the entire 2024 season.

Mauricio spoke with reports about his recovery at the Mets Spring Training facility. His interpreter Alan Suriel revealed what Mauricio had to say.

“I think this is one of those learning lessons that I can take advantage of, something where I can continue to progress. I wouldn’t say that it was technically a good thing that happened but it’s definitely something where I can kind of sit down and reflect.”

Given New York’s offseason moves didn’t align with one of a contending team, it’s safe to say that Steve Cohen’s plan of letting this season play out and make a push during free agency next year is what he’s looking to do.

Mauricio would’ve had a major opportunity to play if it wasn’t for this injury, an unfortunate situation as he has a chance to be one the better young players in the game.

He is the second Mets player to suffer an injury during the offseason with Edwin Diaz tearing the patellar tendon in his right knee during the World Baseball Classic last March.

This is a learning experience for Mauricio and gives him another year to sit back and learn. It could’ve been the perfect year for him to get his chance but that will now have to wait.
