The adjustment on the work schedule of workers in the local government units (LGUs) in the National Capital Region (NCR) will start on May 2, the Metro Manila Council said on Friday.

At a press conference, MMC president and San Juan City Mayor Francis Zamora said the council decided to move its implementation from April 15 to give LGUs and the public more time to prepare.

“Napagkasunduan po natin na yung inilunsad po na magiging 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. work schedule sa mga LGUs dito po sa Metro Manila, ito po ay sisimulan na natin sa May 2 na po,” Zamora said.

According to Zamora, NCR LGUs have a total of around 112,000 employees.

Earlier, the MMC, composed of 17 LGUs in NCR, passed a resolution mandating the adjustment of working hours in LGUs from the traditional schedule of 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

“The persistent traffic congestion in Metro Manila demands innovative solutions for the improvement of commuting conditions and the well-being of the citizens of the NCR,” the resolution read.

“The findings derived from the MMDA study underscore the potential effectiveness of implementing a standardized working schedule for government offices in Metro Manila, particularly during peak hours, in reducing traffic congestion,” it added.

NCR LGUs are advised to issue an ordinance to implement the adjusted working schedule.

President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. on Wednesday said that the government is fast-tracking the mass transit system in the country to address traffic problems.
