The Vancouver Canucks might not be done making trades, as Tyler Toffoli and Jordan Greenway are two names to watch before March 8.
Rick Dhaliwal and Thomas Drance suggest that both players are in play for the Canucks.
“Tyler Toffoli is an interesting name to track here. He had meaningful chemistry with Pettersson during his brief run with the Canucks in 2020, and the freshly extended Canucks centre is a huge fan of his game,” Drance and Dhaliwal write in The Athletic. “Also, the lack of heaviness in the team’s forward lineup has factored heavily into the organization’s thinking during Joshua’s absence, which is why we’re also keeping an eye on Jordan Greenway. The team has rated Greenway highly for a long time, and he could be a deadline target that shakes loose in the sort of price range the Canucks would prefer to pay ahead of March 8.”
Pettersson’s interest in who the Canucks might acquire takes a whole new meaning after the centre signed his 8-year contract extension yesterday.
Toffoli was with the Canucks for ten games during the 2019-20 season and scored six goals while playing with Pettersson. Toffoli was traded to the New Jersey Devils from the Calgary Flames before the season, with the Devils looking like they would make a push for a deep playoff run. With the Devils sitting out of a playoff spot, teams have been checking in on the availability of the pending UFA.
Buffalo Sabres’ winger Jordan Greenway would bring much-needed size to the bottom-six forward group. With Dakota Joshua out with injury, the team’s lack of size in depth positions has been felt.
Greenway also has some term left on his contract, one more year at $3,000,000, so he wouldn’t be a rental like Toffoli.
According to reports, the Sabres want to make a move to help them return to the playoffs in the short term. Greenway is one of the forwards on their roster with some trade deadline value that could provide the return they are looking for.
The Canucks will have to get creative with their cap situation. According to CapFriendly, they project to have $2,600,000 at the deadline. Both Toffoli and Greenway make more than that, so either the Canucks will have to offload some salary or hope to get retainment, which might cause the price to be higher.
