The upcoming iPhone 16 lineup is generating significant buzz, with leaks hinting at major camera improvements, particularly for the Pro models. While Apple remains silent on specifics, a recent rumour suggests a big upgrade for the camera lenses: a protective layer aimed at improving photography quality and eliminating lens flare or ghosting artefacts in photos or videos.

According to a post on the Naver blog by South Korean news aggregator yeux1122– reported by MacRumors, Apple is testing a novel anti-reflective optical coating technology called Atomic Layer Deposition (ALD) for the iPhone 16 Pro. This coating promises to significantly reduce image distortions like lens flare and ghosting, leading to sharper, cleaner photographs.

The report suggests that this new technology is being tested for a “Pro model,” of Apple iPhones potentially encompassing either the iPhone 16 Pro or Pro Max, or perhaps even both. However, other than the name, there are not many details available right now about the ALD coating.Â

Interestingly, this development aligns with the broader speculations of camera enhancements expected in the iPhone 16 lineup. Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo previously hinted at a significant upgrade for the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max cameras, with a jump to 48-megapixel ultra-wide-angle sensors – a substantial leap from the current 12-megapixel offering. Additionally, the Pro model might get the tetraprism telephoto lens currently exclusive to the iPhone 15 Pro Max.

With the iPhone 16 series launch still months away– expected in September, leaks paint a picture of significant camera advancements. Here’s a breakdown of the rumoured upgrades for the iPhone 16 Pro:

ALD Coating: This anti-reflective technology promises to eliminate lens flare and ghosting, a longstanding complaint among iPhone users. ALD allows for precise control over the material’s composition and thickness, offering superior protection against unwanted light artefacts while safeguarding the lens from environmental damage.

48-Megapixel Ultra-Wide Sensor: A significant upgrade from the current 12-megapixel sensor, this promises sharper, richer detail in ultra-wide-angle shots.

Improved Telephoto Lens: Rumours suggest a telephoto lens with up to 5x optical zoom, a feature currently limited to the iPhone 15 Pro Max. This would offer greater flexibility for capturing distant objects with superior clarity.

Other than big hardware, Apple is also expected to offer revamped iPhone experience with upcoming iOS 18 updates. The new iOS iteration is said to bring major upgrades like custom home screen and RCS support along with the AI makeover– which is most awaited. However, nothing is confirmed yet.
