Would you pay £4.3m for one of the fastest road-legal cars on earth? Rare Bugatti Chiron Super Sport 300+ heads to auction

January can be a blue month, but for petrolhead enthusiasts with deep pockets and a penchant for special cars, the start to the year just got that bit more exciting.

That’s because an incredibly rare, ultra desirable feat of French engineering is set to go under the hammer later this month – but it won’t be cheap.

The Bugatti Chiron Super Sport 300+ is one of the world’s fastest – and rarest – road cars, being one of only 30 limited production models ever made and sold to the public.

Fancy a bid? Well, only if your bank account has the appraised £4million sitting around collecting dust should you raise a paddle at the Scottsdale auction hosted by Bonhams in Arizona on 25 January.

A once in a blue moon collecting opportunity, the auction model is one of only eight out of 30 models ever to make it to North America.

The car offered is number 9 in the sequence and was supplied through Manhattan Motorcars in February 2023.

The auction house estimates the new owner will need to place a winning bid in the region of $5million and $5.5million. For us Britons. that’s around £3.9million to £4.3million.

Louis Frankel, from Bonhams Cars described the motor as ‘the quintessence of hypercars’.

He added: ‘Bugatti has an unparalleled reputation in high-performance vehicles and the Chiron Super Sport 300+ is a symbol of that automotive excellence.

‘We look forward to witnessing the surge of excitement and attention this will undoubtedly achieve when we showcase it at our Scottsdale Auction.’

The Chiron Super Sport 300+ was originally sold by the luxury French car maker for £3.1million.

It’s the first time one of these cars has come up for sale publicly.

It only has 255 miles on the clock, 250 of which were Bugatti testing – the other five presumably the world’s most expensive coffee run.

A legend among petrolheads the world over, this car isn’t just exclusive, its a record-breaking beast.

In 2019 former Le Mans-winner Andy Wallace broke the 300mph barrier (after some dispute) at the Ehra-Lessien racetrack in Germany with a top speed of 304.77mph.

While the lucky buyer will be able to go eye-wateringly fast, and is paying to do so, that particular record-breaking car had a series of one-off modifications including tweaks to the ride height, chassis and engine.

The auction model has been electronically limited by Bugatti to a (leisurely) 237mph – still making it one of the fastest road cars ever made.

The speed is only part of the price factor – the design of the car makes it equally covetable.

The exposed carbonfibre bodywork with orange accents is a beautiful nod by Bugatti to its 2010 World Record Edition Veyron Super Sport, the fastest road production car at the time.

Christophe Piochon, MD of Production and Logistics at Bugatti Automobiles said: ‘It is the fastest hyper sports car Bugatti has ever made, and is a true testament to the engineering passion, technical expertise and relentless pursuit of performance our brand is synonymous with.’
