Shoaib Malik is an asset: BPL franchise Fortune Barishal’s owner refutes match-fixing allegations
Bangladesh Premier League franchise Fortune Barishal owner Mizanur Rahman on Friday, January 26 refuted allegations of match-fixing against Shoaib Malik after it was reported earlier in the day the Pakistan all-rounder’s contract with the team was terminated. Mizanur Rahman lauded Shoaib Malik’s contribution to the team in the first three matches of the season.
In a video message, he said: “I deeply regret the rumor regarding Shoaib Malik. He is a great player. He gave us his best. So we should not make a ruckus about it. We lost two consecutive matches so we should focus on the upcoming matches and hopefully, we will turn around. Thank you for being around Fortune Barishal.”
Shoaib Malik played as many as 3 matches for Fortune Barishal in BPL 2024 in the Dhaka leg of the domestic T20 tournament. However, Fortune Barishal announced a replacement for Shoaib Malik, signing the all-rounder’s former Pakistan teammate Ahmed Shehzad for the remainder of the season.
Shoaib Malik left Dhaka to head to Dubai after the first three matches when speculation was rife. The allegations cropped up when Shoaib Malik overstepped three times in an over in which he conceded 18 runs in a BPL game against Khulna Tigers on January 22. Shoaib Malik played another game for Fortune Barishal on January 23 before his involvement in the Dhaka leg came to an end.
