Aadhaar card details not updated in 10 years? Change address and other detail online for free before Dec 14

The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has waived the standard Rs. 50 fee for online Aadhaar updates until December 14. During this period, Indian residents have the opportunity to modify or correct their demographic information-such as name, address, date of birth, gender, mobile number, and email-through the online portal without any charges.

However, while updating all the  demographic details in Aadhaar is free and can be done online, individuals who need to update their photograph, iris, or other biometric details must still visit an Aadhaar enrollment center in person and pay the applicable fee. This requirement is due to the fact that biometric updates require the use of specialized equipment at enrollment centers to scan fingerprints, iris patterns, and other biometric data. Additionally, the biometric update process also includes necessary verification procedures to prevent potential fraudulent activities.

Why Aadhaar updation is mandatory

UIDAI, the regulatory body of Aadhaar, has made it mandatory to update Aadhaar card details every 10 years. This is to ensure that the data is accurate and up-to-date. The government also encourages users to update their Aadhaar card to combat Aadhaar fraud.

UIDAI notes that life events, such as marriage, can necessitate changes in fundamental demographic details like name and address. Similarly, relocations to new areas may require modifications to address and mobile number. Other circumstances, such as changes in familial status due to events like marriage or the passing of a relative, also warrant updates. Additionally, residents may have personal reasons for altering information such as their mobile number or email address.

The UIDAI’s official website emphasises the dynamic nature of individuals’ lives, acknowledging the potential need for adjustments to Aadhaar information to accurately reflect these changes and maintain the integrity of the system. Regular updates ensure that Aadhaar remains a reliable and credible source of identification for various services and transactions.

Additionally,  government  guidelines mandate that when a child reaches the age of 15, they must provide all necessary biometric data for an update. This step is crucial for maintaining the child’s Aadhaar data’s validity and dependability as they mature.
