Earlier this month Aldi was named Cheapest Supermarket of the Year for 2023 by consumer group Which?. The consumer champion kept track of the cost of a basket of groceries at the UK’s eight biggest supermarkets every day throughout the year.

Lidl, the second-cheapest shop for the year, beat its budget rival once in October, becoming the cheapest retailer that month.

Households have seen a rise in their food bills in recent years as inflation has driven up prices at all supermarkets. However last month figures showed that food price inflation decelerated to 6.7% in December, the lowest level since June 2022 and down from 7.7% in November, according to the British Retail Consortium (BRC)-NielsenIQ Shop Price Index.
