Ipoh cop pleads not guilty to assaulting wife

IPOH: A police corporal pleaded not guilty in the Magistrate’s Court here to a charge of voluntarily causing hurt to his wife.

Mohd Zulhazree Razali, 39, who is attached with the Ipoh Police District headquarters was charged with committing the offence on his wife Nur Atirah Suhana Che Razak, 29, who is also a policewoman, at their house in Bandar Baru Putra near here at 7am on May 9, this year.

The accused claimed trial when the charge was read to him before magistrate S. Punitha on Thursday (Nov 23).

According to the charge sheet, the accused had kicked, slapped, and hit his wife with a basket.

He was charged under Section 323 of the Penal Code which provides imprisonment for up to a year or a maximum fine of RM2,000, or both, if found guilty, to be read together with Section 326A of the same law for causing hurt to a spouse.

Section 326A provides imprisonment for a term which may extend to twice the maximum term for which he would have been liable for the offence under Section 323 of the law.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Vatchira Wong Rui Fern asked the court to impose a RM5,000 bail, and to pose additional terms for the accused so as to not disturb the victim.

Mohd Zulhazree’s lawyer Ahmad Syahmi Amran said his client has four children aged between five and 10.

“My client voluntarily came to the court proceedings today, and he has been cooperating with the investigations.

“My client is not a flight risk, and he is here at the court with his family members.

“The RM5,000 bail amount is too high, and I am requesting that the court set a bail for RM2,000,” he added.

Punitha fixed bail at RM2,500 with one surety and set Jan 30 for mention.

He posted bail.
